How We Build Your Patio
We do things the right way. Learn why our method makes your patio last longer and look better.
What Goes Under Your Pavers
This is what we build. Every layer has a job. Together, they make a base that drains water and stays strong.

Why Open-Grade Base?
Open-grade means there are spaces between the rocks. Water flows through these spaces. This is key at the Jersey Shore.
Water Drains Away
Rain goes right through the gravel and into the ground. No puddles. No standing water.
No Frost Heave
When water freezes, it expands. Our base lets water drain so there is nothing to freeze and push your pavers up.
Lasts Longer
Open-grade base does not break down like other materials. Your patio will look great for many years.
Best for the Shore
The Jersey Shore has sandy soil and a high water table. Open-grade base is made for this.
How We Install Your Patio
Here is how we build, step by step. We take our time and do it right.
Dig Out the Area
First, we dig out the area where your patio or walkway will go. We go down about 10 to 12 inches deep. This makes room for all the layers that go underneath your pavers.
Lay the Fabric
We put down a special fabric called geotextile. This fabric lets water through but keeps the dirt from mixing with the gravel. It is like a filter for your base.
Add the Big Gravel
Next, we add 6 to 8 inches of 3/4 inch clean blue gravel. This is the main layer. The spaces between the rocks let water drain down and away. We pack it down tight.
Add the Small Gravel
On top, we add 1 inch of 3/8 inch clean blue gravel. This smaller gravel fills in gaps and gives us a smooth, level surface to lay the pavers on.
Set the Pavers
Now we lay your pavers. We use Cambridge or Techo-Bloc pavers. These are the best brands. We set each one by hand to make sure they are level and tight.
Fill the Joints
Last, we sweep polymeric sand into the gaps between pavers. When we wet it, it hardens and locks everything in place. It also keeps weeds and ants out.
What We Use vs. What We Avoid
Not all materials are the same. Some contractors use cheap stuff that causes problems. Here is what we use and why.
What We Use
3/4" Clean Blue Gravel
Lets water drain through. Does not hold water.
3/8" Clean Blue Gravel
Makes a smooth, level bed for pavers.
Geotextile Fabric
Keeps dirt and gravel separate. Lets water pass.
Cambridge Pavers
ArmorTec finish. Resists stains and fading.
Techo-Bloc Pavers
Premium quality. Many styles and colors.
Polymeric Sand
Locks pavers in place. Stops weeds and ants.
What We Avoid
Crushed Concrete
Holds water. Breaks down over time. Can have rebar and junk in it.
Yellow Sand
Packs down too tight. Traps water. Causes puddles and ice.
Dirt or Soil
Shifts and settles. Causes pavers to sink and become uneven.
Dense-Grade Aggregate
Does not drain well. Water gets trapped and causes frost heave.
Why Cambridge and Techo-Bloc?
We only use the best pavers. Here is why we chose these two brands.
Cambridge Pavers
Cambridge pavers have ArmorTec. This is a special finish that goes all the way through the paver. It makes them:
- Resist stains from oil and grease
- Keep their color longer
- Stay strong in all weather
- Easy to clean
Techo-Bloc Pavers
Techo-Bloc is a premium brand from Canada. They are known for quality and style. Their pavers are:
- Made with the best materials
