Everything you see is sitting on the part you cannot. Here is what belongs under a paver patio at the Jersey Shore, in order — and why fines are the enemy in a freeze-thaw climate.

What is actually under a patio

Built from the bottom up. Every layer has one job.

Open-graded vs dense-graded

Both are real systems. One handles water better.

Dense-graded (the common alternative)

  • Blended stone sizes plus stone dust (QP / DGA)
  • Fines are what make it compact — and what hold water
  • Sheds water off the surface instead of through
  • Strength depends on compaction staying intact
  • Held water is the freeze-thaw mechanism

Open-graded (what we build)

  • Clean single-size stone — #57 sub-base, #8 bedding
  • No fines, so nothing holds water in the base
  • Drains continuously through the structure
  • Interlocks mechanically — strength comes from stone shape
  • Far less to freeze and heave in a Jersey winter

The build sequence

Skip step 2 or step 5 and the rest does not matter.

01

Excavate to real depth

Down to firm subsoil, deep enough for the full base plus bedding plus paver thickness. Removing topsoil entirely matters — organic material decomposes and settles, and it is under the whole patio.

Compact the subgrade

The native soil gets compacted before any stone goes down. A base built on loose subgrade inherits every bit of that movement.

Lay geotextile separation

Fabric between soil and stone. In our sandy soil this is what stops fine material migrating up into the base and filling the voids over the years.

Build the #57 sub-base in lifts

Clean 3/4 inch open-graded stone, placed and compacted in lifts rather than all at once. This is the structural layer and it carries the load.

Screed the #8 bedding course

About an inch of clean 3/8 inch stone, screeded flat. This is what the pavers sit on. It is not sand, and it is not stone dust — both hold water.

Set pavers and cut edges

Laid to pattern, cut clean at the perimeter, with the surface pitched to shed water away from the house.

Concrete edge with rebar

A 4,000 PSI concrete edge with rebar running through it locks the perimeter. Pavers move outward over time when nothing holds the edge, and the joints open from the outside in.

Polymeric sand the joints

Why this matters more at the shore

Ocean County gets a genuine freeze-thaw cycle — repeated freezing and thawing through the winter rather than one long hard freeze. Every one of those cycles is an opportunity for water trapped in a base to expand and lift the patio. A patio built on a base that holds water does not fail in one dramatic winter; it fails a millimetre at a time over several, until the surface reads uneven and the joints have opened.

How to spot a bad base in an existing patio

You cannot see the base, but you can read it.

Dips or low spots holding waterthe base has settled unevenly, usually from organic material or poor compaction

Paver base questions

What is the best base material for patio pavers?
For the Jersey Shore we build on an open-graded base: ASTM #57 clean stone for the sub-base and ASTM #8 clean stone for the bedding layer, with no fines in either. Open-graded means the stone is a single size with voids between the pieces, so water passes straight through instead of being held in the base. In a freeze-thaw climate that drainage is what keeps the patio flat.
What is the difference between open-graded and dense-graded base?
Dense-graded base (often called QP, quarry process, or dense-graded aggregate) is a blend of stone sizes plus stone dust that compacts into a nearly solid mass. It is strong, but the fines hold water. Open-graded base is uniform clean stone with permanent voids — it drains continuously and interlocks mechanically rather than relying on compacted dust. Both are legitimate; open-graded performs better where water and frost are the main threats.
Can you lay pavers on sand or dirt?
No. Sand and soil both hold water and both move. A patio set on either looks correct for a season and then settles, dips and heaves. Sand belongs nowhere in a base except as a thin bedding course in a dense-graded system — and even there we prefer #8 clean stone instead.
How thick should a paver patio base be?
For a pedestrian patio in stable soil, generally 6 inches of compacted base under a 1 to 1.5 inch bedding layer. Driveways and vehicle loads need more, commonly 8 to 12 inches. Soft, wet or organic soils need more again, plus geotextile separation.
Do I need geotextile fabric under a paver base?
In sandy Ocean County soil, yes — we use it as a separation layer between the native soil and the stone. Without it, fine soil migrates up into the base over years, filling the voids that make an open-graded base work and slowly turning a draining base into a water-holding one.
Why does my patio heave in winter?
Water held in the base freezes and expands. That is the entire mechanism. A base that holds fines holds water, and each freeze lifts the patio a little and sets it down slightly differently. Get the water out of the base and freeze-thaw largely stops being a problem.
What does a paver patio cost?
It is priced per project after a site visit, because size, access, material and existing base conditions swing it enormously. You get a detailed itemized written estimate within 48 hours of the visit.
